Harry Cartmell

September 18, 1922 ~ February 24, 2017 (age 94)

Cartmell-James Henry “Harry” P.Eng, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2017, at 94 years of age at Parkwood Hospital.  Born September 18, 1922 in Harrison Mills, BC.  He was the last surviving child of Henry Carr and Edith Caroline Cartmell.  Predeceased by his siblings Eva Cartmell (1997), Clara Cartmell (2010) and Anne (John) Clegg (2016) all of Chilliwack BC.  After High School Harry joined the RCAF in 1941 and served in the RAF 140 Squadron as a Reconnaissance Pilot earning the rank of Flight Lieutenant and was decorated with the DFC and Croix de Guerre.  Post war, he studied Mechanical Engineering at UBC.  In 1951, he married Mary Houston Hiddleston (1993).  Harry is survived by 2 children Maureen (late Al, 2013) Smithers, Ian (Lisa) Cartmell; 2 Grandchildren Jeffrey Smithers, and Melanie Cartmell; nieces Barbara (Dwaine) Brooke, Peggy (Wayne) Robinson, Jane Clegg, nephews Richard (Daphne) Clegg, Jack (Ruby) Clegg.  Dad worked at Imperial Tobacco in Montreal and Aylmer.  He was an avid fisherman, hunter, curler and an active member in the Aylmer Legion, Rotary, and Curling Club.  The family greatly appreciates the care by Dr. Michael Borrie and all the staff of 2 Perth and 4 Bruce Elgin at Parkwood Veterans Care.  Special gratitude to Isabella, Wendy, Mary and Tammy for their extra care of Father.  Arrangements entrusted to the Shawn Jackson Funeral Home, St. Thomas (519-631-0570).  Cremation has taken place.  A visitation will be held in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd, Western Counties Wing, Rm # E2-107 at Parkwood Institute 550 Wellington Road S. London, on Thursday, March 2, 2017 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm.  In Lieu of flowers donation to the Alzheimer’s Society would be appreciated.  Personal condolences to the family can be made at
